A long neck woman

I asked this woman if I could take a photo of her, and she approved.
This event happened when, I visited her small village in the north of Thailand, during a jungle trip that I was making. They still life on a very primitive way to our standards. But they all look happy. We stayed overnight in there village and had a good time with them. They are very friendly and welcomed our group with open arms. There kids invite me to play some kick volleyball or Sepak Takraw, which was actually very funny to do..

They start putting these rings around there neck from a very young age. The older they are the more rings they will have. So they get more status in there village by having a longer neck.

The Mao Zedong Statue is a marble sculpture of 30 meters high located in Tiznfu Square, in the center of Chengdu. It has an outstretched arm, like he is waving to something on the other side of square. Well, when I turned my back to him, I only saw him waving in the direction of capitalist stores, like Rolex and Louis Vuitton. Which I found very funny.

A Coptic priest stands outside on a small edge, in front of an entrance. It is the entrance to the church of Abuna Yemata, which was carved into a sandstone pillar around the sixth century. They are located in the Gheralta Mountains of North Ethiopia. You need to climb on one of the mountain walls to reach this church. At the end there is a small edge where you don’t want to fall off, to reach it. He was a very annoying man, that was constantly asking for extra money to go inside. Even we had the entrance ticket already paid.

Walking on the Makgadikgadi Pan

The Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the biggest salt pan in the world. Its lake dried up about 10.000 years ago creating this enormous salt flat. Here Yujie is walking in the middle of it, with no other human to see till the end of the horizon.

Or also known as the golden Buddha of Mandalay in former Burma. Only man can pay to at more gold leaves on this bronze statue. They put so much of this stuff on it, that it has created a 15 centimetres gold armour around it. For me it is always strange that people can give so much money to practice religion. But it also makes some places special to visit.

Here is one of these guys putting more gold on Maha Muni. Making the already enormous amount of gold skin even thicker.

A good hike in the North of Thailand brought me to the long neck woman. In one of their very small villages, this little boy was playing some music. He was playing on what looks like a self-made guitar, but it didn’t sound bad at all.

The Xiangkhoang Plateau in Laos, with its thousands of giant prehistoric jars, is a fascinating place to visit. What was the purpose of these jars? It looks too big for drinking vessels, but local legend thinks different. A race of giants would have lived here. Drinking cups up to 3000kg! For those giants, a full grown T-Rex, would just be a chicken. But researchers think they are associated with prehistoric burial practices. Anyway I didn’t see any bones in them, but well a group of children that where passing by.

Maras Salt Mines

We rent a local taxi in Urubamba, to drive trough the Sacred Valley of Peru, for a day. One of the places we visit where these ancient Inca salt panes. They are more then 500 year old and still mined by local families. The super salty water flows in thousands of shallow pools, where it evaporates. Leaving behind the Peruvian pink salt.

Xiangxi is a crazy little place. Its an ancient town with some nice old houses and a very cool bridge. But it is also a party town, at night you get blinded by all the neon lights from all the bars on the riverside.

In daytime its a very cool place to walk around in all the small streets. There we met this very small old local lady selling flowers. She had a lot of character, so after asking nicely for her permission, I could take a photo of her. Isn’t she looking great?

The travelling was heavy to reach Mount Kailash(冈仁波齐), but the effort was fully worth it. With its height of 6718 meters, it’s the source of the longest rivers in India. For Buddhists, Hindus, Jains and Bönpos pilgrims this mountain is very holy and the most important one of all mountains in the world.
We enjoyed the walk around it, seeing the worship by these different cultures.

Looking at the local people who are living around the mountain all their life and finding a way to make a living.
Like this colorful woman collect the yaks solid waste and use it as energy source in her house.

Lady of the Mursi tribes

When you travel to Ethiopia, you have a good opportunity to see different tribes. Some are a little challenging to reach… like the Mursi tribe. They have these crazy decoration on them, a plate in the under lip. Does it benefit them when they eating? Nope!
